Construcciones Yamaro: PAD Civil and Komatsu advancing civil construction

PAD Civil is using Komatsu machinery and digital construction technology to deliver safer and more efficient civil infrastructure projects across Victoria.
Founded by managing director Ricky Thomson, PAD Civil has grown from its origins in commercial plumbing and drainage into a diversified civil construction contractor servicing both public and private sector clients. Today, the company delivers projects across road infrastructure, utilities, renewable energy, sports and recreation facilities, health and education precincts, rail infrastructure, industrial developments and commercial construction.
With in-house capabilities across civil works, engineering, drainage and underground services, PAD Civil provides clients with an integrated approach to project delivery, helping streamline construction programs while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and efficiency.
As the business has expanded, so too has its investment in technology and innovation. PAD Civil has been purchasing Komatsu machinery for the past five years, working closely with the team to integrate intelligent Machine Control (iMC), Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance (3DMG) and Komatsu’s Smart Construction suite of digital solutions across its fleet.

Thomson says the ability to access real-time project data and machine guidance technology is helping improve accuracy, productivity and visibility across the company’s civil projects.
“Digital visibility is critical on major civil projects because it gives us live data every day,” he says. “Through drone survey support and live as-built data from the machines, we can track excavation quantities and project progress in real time. It gives our clients trust and confidence in what we’re doing on site.”
One challenge on civil projects is excavating accurately to design, particularly during deep drainage works and complex excavation activities.
“Trying to dig to a design model with deep drainage is always challenging, but with iMC and 3DMG, we can see real data directly from the machine with the operator, without needing a spotter to check heights, helping us improve both safety and efficiency,” says Thomson.
“It’s also helping our crews complete deep excavations, battering and benching works with greater precision, while reducing the need for external survey support throughout the project lifecycle.”
Komatsu’s iMC technology is an integrated machine guidance and automation system that uses GPS, sensors and 3D design data to help operators work directly to the project design. By automating key machine functions and providing real-time positioning information, iMC improves accuracy, reduces rework and survey requirements, and helps increase productivity on site.
“Our crews are much more self-sufficient thanks to iMC because they’re not relying on external surveyors. The information and guidance are right there in the cab and available when they need it,” says Thomson.
The benefits become clear when operating in tight corridors and around live services, where manoeuvring heavy machinery and lifting materials can present additional risks and challenges.
“Being able to see exactly where you are relative to the design and work confidently around existing services is a major advantage,” says Thomson. “It helps improve safety while also keeping projects moving.”
Beyond productivity and project delivery, PAD Civil’s investment in modern equipment and technology is also helping attract and retain skilled operators in an increasingly competitive labour market.
“Using state-of-the-art technology makes operators more comfortable and confident, which ultimately makes them safer,” says Thomson. “When you’ve got high-quality equipment and technology that genuinely helps people do their job better, good operators want to stay. That’s important for us as we continue to grow.”
The partnership extends beyond the initial machine purchase, with ongoing aftersales and on-site support playing a critical role in maintaining uptime, productivity and project performance.
“The aftersales and on-site support make a massive difference because it gives us confidence in our machines and we know the team is there to support us if any issues arise,” says Thomson.
“As we continue to work on Tier 1 infrastructure and construction projects, having a machinery partner that can provide both quality equipment and smart technology solutions is critical to our success. We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with Komatsu for many years to come.”
