Multiplex has completed construction of the new Acute Services Building at John Hunter Hospital, expanding access to health services across Newcastle and the Hunter.

Delivered as part of the $890 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct, in partnership with Health Infrastructure and Hunter New England Local Health District, the redevelopment is the largest project undertaken by the contractor for Health Infrastructure to date.

Located on the existing hospital campus, the new building expands John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children’s Hospital, spanning 110,000 square metres over seven clinical levels and four levels of car parking, and topped with a double rooftop helipad.

Construction completion was marked at an on-site event attended by New South Wales Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley and Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery, along with representatives from Multiplex, Health Infrastructure and Hunter New England Local Health District.

The project delivered 22 new operating theatres. The redevelopment includes new treatment, maternity, neonatal and education facilities.

Multiplex regional managing director David Ghannoum said the company was proud to deliver the project, which will support local communities for generations to come.

“It reflects our expertise in delivering highly complex and large-scale healthcare projects,” said Ghannoum.

The completed building will expand healthcare capacity across the region, including a new Emergency Department designed to meet projected future demand of more than 95,000 presentations each year.

A new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will increase capacity by 60 per cent and will operate alongside a specialist paediatric ICU. The project has also delivered 22 new operating theatres to support growing demand for procedural services.

The redevelopment includes new birthing suites, an inpatient maternity unit, a neonatal ICU and special care nursery. It also features education facilities for healthcare workers and more than 900 additional car parking spaces for patients, staff and visitors.

The new building was delivered beside the operational John Hunter Hospital.

Multiplex delivered the project beside the operational John Hunter Hospital, one of the busiest hospitals in NSW.

The building was constructed over a complex geological setting, including above a network of legacy mine workings. More than 6,000 cubic metres of grout was used to fill old mineshafts before foundation works began.

The project also involved the installation of specialised medical equipment, including CT scanners, X-ray and angiography machines. These spaces required millimetre-level construction tolerances, as well as extensive services integration across cooling systems, high-capacity power, security and communications infrastructure.

About 70 per cent of building work was undertaken by local businesses. Across the project, 4,700 construction workers were employed, with about 930 workers on site each day at peak construction.

The new Acute Services Building was delivered as part of the $890 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct.

As part of the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program (ISLP), Multiplex delivered its 15th Connectivity Centre, connecting local job seekers with employment, training and support services. The program secured 83 placements for participants across the Hunter region, supporting Indigenous Australians, youth at risk, long-term unemployed people and jobseekers from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Women represented about 14 per cent of the total workforce on the project. In partnership with the NSW Government’s Women in Construction ISLP, Multiplex also delivered its Jump Start and Jump Start Trades programs for female students in Years 10 to 12. More than 120 women participated in the program, which introduced students to career pathways across electrical, plumbing, carpentry, site supervision and built environment disciplines. Many went on to pursue trade apprenticeships or further study.
