Bennett Construction has completed a $9 million early learning centre in Howrah, Tasmania, following a 10-month construction program.

Developed by Tipalea Partners, the 2,400-square-metre Green Leaves Early Learning Glebe Hill facility will provide 106 childcare places for children aged between six weeks and six years.

The centre is located at 21 Commerce Drive, next to Tipalea Partners’ Glebe Hill Village retail development, which was completed in 2022.

A recent ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the centre’s completion, attended by Tipalea Partners chief executive officer Scott Spanton, Tasmanian Treasurer and Member for Franklin Eric Abetz, City of Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley and Green Leaves business development and construction manager Stuart Andrews.

Up to 30 workers were on site each day during peak construction, with about 200 workers contributing to the project throughout its delivery.

Bennett Construction director Jeremy Warren said the specialised facility was constructed to meet Green Leaves’ operational and safety requirements.

“This was a highly specialised build, constructed to Green Leaves’ exact requirements. Safety was considered in every detail – from the positioning of fixtures and fittings to the materials installed throughout the centre. Tipalea were incredibly supportive and responsive throughout the entire process,” said Warren.

The facility includes seven classrooms, a parent lounge, a commercial-grade kitchen and landscaped outdoor areas featuring a bike track and market garden.

“The fully equipped commercial kitchen is a real rarity in childcare centres, and the large outdoor environment was a major focus of the project,” said Warren. “Landscaping alone took up a third of the overall construction program, where it would account for just six weeks on a standard childcare build.”

Designed by architecture firm Brown Falconer, the building uses gabled roof forms and natural-looking materials intended to reflect the surrounding residential area. The development also includes an interactive sculpture titled I Hear You, which is designed to encourage communication and play.

Spanton said the project responds to growing demand for childcare services in south-east Tasmania.

“Families need more places, not longer waiting lists,” he said. “This new premium early learning centre will deliver high-quality childcare in a convenient location alongside retail and essential services, helping make life easier for local parents.”

Green Leaves will operate the new facility, adding to its national network of more than 70 centres.

The project is Tipalea Partners’ seventh development in Tasmania and its first childcare project in the state. Its other Tasmanian developments include Glebe Hill Village in Howrah, Spring Farm Village in Kingston and Stony Rise Village in Devonport, which is under construction.
