Preparatory works have commenced at the Macquarie Point Stadium site in Hobart, with Hazell Bros appointed to undertake the bulk earthworks.

The Tasmanian contractor secured the package through a competitive procurement process and will carry out works until mid-2027.

The program includes the excavation of about 100,000 cubic metres of soil, site preparation and archaeological investigations ahead of major stadium construction.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the start of works marks another milestone for the project.

“The diggers have arrived, the builders are here, and we are getting on with the job,” said Rockliff. “These critical works are being delivered by Hazell Bros, a highly respected Tasmanian company with decades of experience delivering major infrastructure projects across our state.”

Procurement for the main stadium construction contract is also progressing, with a tender process underway and the successful contractor expected to be appointed by the end of 2026.

The multipurpose stadium forms part of the broader redevelopment of the Macquarie Point Precinct, which is intended to reconnect Hobart’s CBD with the waterfront and deliver new public spaces, housing, commercial activity and cultural uses. The Australian Government has committed $240 million to the precinct.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said the redevelopment will support tourism, economic activity and the revitalisation of the waterfront site.

“Projects of this scale create jobs, support local businesses and serve as a legacy for communities,” said King.

The stadium is expected to support thousands of jobs during construction and generate longer-term economic activity through tourism, investment and major events.

The AFL has announced its extended partnership with Australian equipment hire and solutions provider Coates in a bid to increase support for women’s football. Coates has expanded its support to become an official partner of AFLW and Workplay, the AFL’s careers platform for AFLW players, after joining the AFL as the naming rights partner of the Coates Talent League (formerly NAB League) earlier this year.
