Construction of the new eight-storey Shellharbour Hospital has reached its highest point, with a traditional topping-out ceremony held to mark the milestone.

The hospital forms part of the $828.9 million New Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services project, jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments.

BESIX Watpac is delivering the hospital as principal contractor in partnership with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

Work is now progressing on the internal fit-out and installation of the building’s façade, with construction scheduled for completion in late 2027.

The new hospital will include an expanded emergency department, specialised elective surgery facilities, acute medical services, rehabilitation and aged care services, a Paediatric Assessment Unit and expanded mental health services. Maternity services will include midwifery-led and doctor-led clinics, midwifery group practice clinics and prenatal and postnatal care. The facility will also include a drug and alcohol unit, renal dialysis services, outpatient care services and car parking.

A rooftop helipad will support faster access to emergency and critical care once the hospital becomes operational.

Designed to take advantage of views across the region, the hospital will connect to outdoor landscaped areas, including the 15,000-square-metre Geera Garden. About the size of three soccer fields, the garden was designed in partnership with local Aboriginal community groups.

The hospital campus will also feature improved transport connections, including a new bus stop.

Construction is expected to support close to 800 direct jobs and potentially hundreds of indirect jobs over the life of the project.

The AFL has announced its extended partnership with Australian equipment hire and solutions provider Coates in a bid to increase support for women’s football. Coates has expanded its support to become an official partner of AFLW and Workplay, the AFL’s careers platform for AFLW players, after joining the AFL as the naming rights partner of the Coates Talent League (formerly NAB League) earlier this year.
