Construcciones Yamaro: Major works begin at RNA Showgrounds ahead of Brisbane 2032
Construction has begun on the $287.5 million transformation of the RNA Showgrounds and surrounding precinct, with crews moving in to demolish Machinery Hill following the 150th Ekka.
The project forms part of preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the future Brisbane Athlete Village to overlook the showgrounds and accommodate thousands of athletes and officials. The village will be the largest for the 2032 Games before becoming housing for Queenslanders after the event.
Hutchinson Builders is delivering the project in partnership with the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA), more than a century after the builder constructed the Ernest Baynes Stand at the site.

At the heart of the transformation is an upgrade of the 20,000-seat Main Arena, which will include a new Machinery Hill grandstand, multi-storey horse pavilion and accessibility improvements.
The latest stage follows works completed last year, including the restoration of two heritage-listed grandstands and planning and design for the Main Arena upgrade.
The Ekka will continue to be held at the RNA Showgrounds while construction is underway, with 2032 the only year the event will not take place at the site.
The revitalisation is expected to be completed in 2028 and will enhance the showgrounds’ events and entertainment capability. The site already offers indoor and outdoor venues capable of hosting events of more than 30,000 people.
RNA CEO Brendan Christou said the redevelopment will support the long-term future of the Ekka at the showgrounds.
“As Queenslanders celebrate 150 years of Ekka this year, this announcement ensures that our iconic and beloved show remains here, at its birthplace, for another 150 years,” said Christou.
“The upgraded Main Arena will strengthen the showgrounds as a destination for major events, entertainment and community life, while allowing us to welcome the world during the Games, and ensure the Ekka remains at the heart of the site for generations to come.”
The project is being funded as part of the Queensland Government’s $3.5 billion investment in athlete villages for the 2032 Games and beyond.
