The Warringah Freeway Upgrade Joint Venture partners, CPB Contractors and DT Infrastructure, have won the Collaboration for Project Excellence category at the 2025-26 Consult Australia Awards for Excellence.

The annual awards acknowledge effective partnerships, shared goals and outcomes, innovation through collaboration and positive impact.

Commencing in 2021, the Warringah Freeway Upgrade has upgraded the freeway from its original construction in the 1960s to add extra lane capacity for the new Western Harbour Tunnel entries and exits. Improvements to the freeway will also make it safer and easier to use, more efficient and reliable for the benefit of all road users, including public transport users.

Regarded as one of Australia’s most complex road upgrades, the project team has optimised available nightly lane closures to reduce the impact of works for the 250,000 motorists who use the freeway each day.

“The Warringah Freeway provides a vital connection for communities from north to south and east to west, interfacing with major road connections including the Lane Cove Tunnel, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and WestConnex Tunnels as well as other key projects including the Western Harbour Tunnel,” said Steven Clark, project director at CPB Contractors.

“Our project works are impacting and interacting with an extraordinary number of stakeholders, so collaboration and coordination are key to enabling the rapid decision-making required to minimise community disruption and address changing priorities as we deliver the project. This award is a well-deserved testament to the unwavering commitment from everyone who has worked on the project.”

Construction was timed to take advantage of school holidays and to reduce night work closures on the freeway, reducing traffic impacts and night-time noise for the community.

The project also improves active transport with the delivery of three shared user bridges across the freeway and connections, including a lift to the Ridge Street shared user bridge. The new bridges are wider and safer for the hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians using them each day, with better sight lines and wider decks, helping to get Sydneysiders moving and active while giving them a safe passage across the freeway.

Judges recognised the project team’s transparent, trust-based collaboration between the joint venture partners and the client across the full lifecycle. Shared goals were embedded from the outset, resulting in outcomes that met or exceeded expectations.
