Construcciones Yamaro: RMIT launches program to improve sustainability in building design
RMIT has introduced a suite of vocational education skill sets aimed at preparing the local building design and construction workforce for a clean economy future.
These three qualifications, collectively known as the Sustainable Building Design Skill Sets, will provide both current and prospective workers with knowledge in sustainable building design, construction and retrofitting, and operations.
Mish Eastman, deputy vice chancellor of Vocational Education and vice president at RMIT, underscored the significance of such initiatives. She said, “As Australia’s largest dual-sector university, RMIT and our College of Vocational Education is primed to support the transition to a clean economy through the co-creation and delivery of new and emerging skills – working hand in glove with our industry partners, communities and government.”
“These sustainable building design skill sets are an example of true industry-embedded co-design that ensures we address the real workforce challenges through meaningful skills solutions.”

These skill sets, which are short courses aimed at upskilling or complementing broader qualifications like construction project management, architecture and industrial design, will be offered fee-free during the pilot phase in 2024. Following the pilot, the program will be evaluated for potential ongoing delivery.
The development of these skill sets has been supported by funding from the Victorian Government’s $6 million Clean Economy Workforce Capacity Building Fund.
