Aspiring Olympic athletes will soon have more opportunities to train and play in Sydney, as two new sports and recreation facilities enter the construction phase.

Upon completion, the second stage of Gunyama Park and the Huntley Street Recreation Centre will offer the Green Square and Alexandria communities greater access to world-class sports amenities and public spaces.

Gunyama Park Stage 2 is expected to add an extra 6,300 square metres of green, open space to the site. The expansion includes a skate plaza, a playground and an amenities block, which will complement the City of Sydney’s award-winning pool, recreation centre and outdoor synthetic football pitch.

The Huntley Street Recreation Centre will feature four multipurpose courts designed to accommodate basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore emphasised the community’s passion for sports and expressed a desire to provide ample spaces for training and play.

“Part of a healthy community is having access to nature,” said Moore. “As more people move into our area and density increases, it is vital we provide these public facilities so our residents can maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.”

Starting later this year, the Gunyama Park project is set to introduce over 150 new trees, contributing to the City of Sydney’s goal of achieving at least 27 per cent tree canopy cover by 2050. Additionally, a new tree-lined road will provide more than 25 parking spaces to the east of the park.

The amenities block will include toilets and change rooms for teams using the football pitch, while the park will feature water and nature play elements, a playground, a lawn area and shade canopies. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2026, weather and other conditions permitting.

Later this year, the City of Sydney will also begin converting an existing warehouse into the Huntley Street Recreation Centre, which will feature four multipurpose indoor courts, outdoor community spaces and front-of-house facilities. In alignment with the City of Sydney’s sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2035, the project will incorporate solar panels and water tanks to collect and utilise rainwater. Construction of the Huntley Street Recreation Centre is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

These new facilities aim to help meet the growing local demand for sports infrastructure.
