Construcciones Yamaro: New $15M training centre for North QLD’s green hydrogen future
The Queensland Government has unveiled plans for a new $15 million skills and training facility in Townsville, aimed at boosting the region’s green hydrogen workforce.
Townsville’s Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre will equip local workers with the expertise needed to fill thousands of new jobs created under the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan and the Clean Energy Workforce Roadmap.
Shayne La Combre, CEO of the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC), indicated that the new facility will serve as a cornerstone for preparing Queensland’s plumbing and fire protection professionals.
“With the ability to deliver high-quality training locally where it’s most needed and the flexibility to customise programs to industry demands, this facility will be a crucial hub for developing future skills, driving innovation and boosting economic growth in the region,” said La Combre.
“A PICAC Training Hub in Townsville will not only cater to new apprentices but also provide vital upskilling opportunities for existing practitioners and ensures that our workforce remains at the forefront of industry advancements, keeping our construction and safety standards world-class.”

Queensland’s Member for Townsville and Resources and Critical Minerals Minister Scott Stewart highlighted that the region is poised for the third fastest job growth in Queensland. He emphasised that investments like the new training centre are crucial for enabling local people to capitalise on the significant opportunities presented in this promising decade.
“The training services at this new facility will not only deliver the training required for North Queensland’s green hydrogen future but will also complement skills needed for our critical minerals mining and processing projects,” said Stewart.
The new centre will offer training in plumbing and fire protection, spanning from pre-apprenticeship courses to full Certificate III apprenticeships, as well as Certificate IV and post-trade qualifications. It will also provide accredited training in emerging technologies and applications, including working safely with hydrogen and other renewable gases, along with a comprehensive series of training modules relating to construction industry safety and occupational health and safety.
Queensland Minister for Training and Skills Development Lance McCallum said: “This new facility will do what matters for the North Queensland workers of today, and tomorrow.”
The Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre in Townsville will be the first of its kind in regional Queensland, complementing the existing facility in Beenleigh, Brisbane.
