An $87 million contract has been awarded to BMD for the Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program, marking a major milestone in the development of Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Athlete Village.

Enabled by Economic Development Queensland, the program will lay the groundwork for the Brisbane Athlete Village and enhance the city’s readiness for hosting international athletes and para-athletes for the Brisbane 2032 Games.

“As a proud Australian contractor with 45 years’ experience, BMD is looking forward to being part of the Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program – a visionary project that will redefine urban connectivity and community vibrancy,” said Scott Power, CEO of BMD.

“Having delivered necessary infrastructure upgrades within Northshore Brisbane since 2016, BMD’s experience, capability and collaborative approach to contracting will pave the way for the Brisbane Athlete Village and beyond.

“BMD’s focus is on powering performance and leaving enduring legacies in the communities we operate in. Projects like this are an opportunity to create jobs and work with local businesses to ensure great local benefits as well as a diverse, inclusive and connected workforce.”

The accelerated works include several new roads in the Northshore precinct as well as significant enhancements to existing roads, such as the creation of a sub-tropical boulevard along Macarthur Avenue. The tree-lined boulevard will feature separated cycleways, footpaths and native landscaping. Works are set to commence onsite this month.

Upon completion, the Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program is anticipated to set a benchmark for sustainability, resilience and innovation. When fully matured, the trees are expected to provide 75 to 80 per cent shade coverage on the road verges, creating a cool, sun-safe environment for residents and visitors, including athletes and para-athletes at the games. The installation of smart, multi-function light poles throughout the precinct will support enhanced connectivity and security features. Additionally, the program will prepare new development sites for the future construction of the Brisbane Athlete Village.

Last year, the Queensland Government allocated more than $154 million towards the project’s necessary infrastructure works.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles highlighted the abundant opportunities available in the city, emphasising the importance of capitalising on them now.

“These early works will transform Northshore Brisbane now, well ahead of 2032, and deliver a better, more connected Brisbane,” said Miles. “Northshore will become home to Team Australia, and incredible athletes and para-athletes from right around the world, when Brisbane hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

“And after the Games, this area will be repurposed into much need housing, including social and affordable homes.”
