Construcciones Yamaro: Adelaide Marriott Hotel opens in historic GPO building
The new Adelaide Marriott Hotel, constructed by BESIX Watpac, has officially opened its doors. Situated within the historic General Post Office (GPO) building – a heritage-listed landmark that has stood at the corner of King William and Franklin Streets for over 150 years – the hotel blends modern luxury with a storied past.
Al Crosby, general manager for Victoria at BESIX Watpac, praised the construction team’s hard work, resilience and innovative, solutions-driven approach in completing the hotel.
“A job of this scale and complexity exemplifies BESIX Watpac’s ability to deliver exceptional world-class projects,” said Crosby. “It stands as another outstanding addition to our distinguished global portfolio across the residential and hotels sector, which includes iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and the Royal Atlantis Resort and Residences in Dubai.”
Crosby also highlighted that construction of the Adelaide Marriott Hotel began in March 2021 – a particularly difficult period for both the world and the construction industry.
“Our team worked through this challenging period and I’m incredibly proud of the work they’ve accomplished and their ability to deliver a truly stunning project for the city of Adelaide,” he added.

The tower section of the project required approximately 620 tonnes of structural steel, with an additional 137 tonnes used in the heritage area. Over 7,500 cubic metres of concrete were poured, and 1,092 individual exterior scallop sections were installed to create the building’s striking façade.
Greaton, the property developer behind this extraordinary project, commissioned the build and appointed BESIX Watpac as the builder.
Nicho Teng, managing director of Greaton, shared that the company’s experience with BESIX Watpac had been exceptionally positive. “The local team expertly managed the design and construction of the hotel, and we collaborated closely through various stages of planning to ensure the project’s successful delivery,” said Teng.
The 14-level luxury hotel features 285 rooms, including a presidential suite, along with a club lounge, restaurants and bars, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, and function and conference rooms.
Paul Gallop, general manager of the Adelaide Marriott Hotel, described the new hotel as a gateway to discovering Adelaide.
“From premier cultural, sporting, culinary and business events, to exploring world-renowned wine regions, Adelaide is booming,” said Gallop. “We are excited to open this milestone hotel, the first Marriott Hotel in South Australia, and look forward to welcoming our guests to experience our heartfelt service and wonderful hospitality.”
