Major strengthening works have begun on McCoys Bridge to ensure its ongoing resilience for farmers, freight operators and local communities in Northern Victoria for years to come. The bridge, spanning the Goulburn River, was affected by the October 2022 floods.

The $8 million project, funded by the Victorian Government, will enhance the bridge’s strength and resilience, marking the state’s second-largest flood recovery investment after the Bogong High Plains Road landslip remediation.

“The floods we’ve seen over the past few years have caused unprecedented damage to our roads, including McCoys Bridge – that’s why we’re investing $8 million to not just repair it, but strengthen the bridge for the long haul,” said Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

Built in 1941, the heritage-listed McCoys Bridge is the seventh longest bridge in Victoria. To preserve its historical appearance, all strengthening work will be conducted underground.

Crews will reinforce the bridge’s foundations on the Murray Valley Highway near Kotupna by installing 11-metre-deep reinforced concrete piles on either side of the ten existing piers. These piles will be connected to the current foundations by underground concrete beams, ensuring stability without altering the bridge’s appearance.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said: “These long-term bridge strengthening works will ensure the bridge can continue to connect Northern Victorian towns including Mooroopna, Shepparton, Barmah, Nathalia and Wyuna for years to come.”

This year, the Victorian Government is set to invest $964 million in road infrastructure, including $770 million for road and bridge maintenance, along with additional funds to address flood damage statewide. This investment is part of a broader $6.6 billion commitment over a decade, aimed at future-proofing Victorian roads to accommodate the state’s rapid growth and manage increased flooding events.

Strengthening works on McCoys Bridge are expected to be completed by December this year, weather permitting.
