Construcciones Yamaro: Sydney Metro Central Station project wins global accolade
The Sydney Metro Central Station project has been recognised on the world stage, taking out the 2025 Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence at the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Structural Awards.
The Aurecon and GHD Joint Venture (AGJV) received the top honour for structural planning and technical leadership on the project, which introduced a new station and pedestrian tunnels beneath the country’s busiest rail terminal. The award caps a highly competitive year, with judges noting the project’s ambition, execution and contribution to long-term public value.
Sydney Metro Central Station has been described as a landmark in Australia’s structural engineering capability. The design placed structural thinking at the centre of the project, improving accessibility, reducing embodied carbon and enhancing sightlines, safety and wayfinding. The project’s top-down construction method and reimagining of the reference design were key differentiators, demonstrating how structural engineers lead high-impact infrastructure above and below ground.
The Supreme Award is assessed across four pillars – Planet, People, Process and Profession – reflecting IStructE’s focus on the environmental and societal responsibilities of the discipline. Judges highlighted the complexity of the work and the clarity of technical decision-making throughout delivery.
Ten additional projects from the 34 shortlisted entries were recognised, with awards spanning innovation, structural ingenuity and social impact. Sustainability was a central theme across the winners, with particular emphasis on reducing embodied carbon and integrating environmentally responsible design solutions.

Professor John Orr, chair of the judging panel and chartered member of the IStructE, said the Sydney Metro Central Station entry stood out for the way the engineering team refined and improved the reference design. He noted the “fiendishly clever” top-down sequence developed to meet tight program requirements and the attention given to reusability and demountability, which reinforced the project’s long-term value.
“In an incredibly high-calibre playing field, Sydney’s Central Station Metro clinched a very well-deserved victory,” added Orr.
“Yet again, this year’s awards also recognised a wealth of other inspiring projects, all characterised by their intelligent use of materials, circular design principles and low-carbon construction. Our judging framework, focused on key attributes, highlights how structural engineers are driving innovation towards a safer, more sustainable built environment.”
The 2025 winners were announced in London on 14 November.
