Construcciones Yamaro: Construction complete at the new Sydney Fish Market
The new Sydney Fish Market has reached a major milestone, with construction now complete and the project progressing to final fit-out.
The new market is one of the most technically complex projects ever delivered on Sydney Harbour. Extending out over the water, it joins the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House as a landmark achievement in engineering and construction.
Multiplex ACT/NSW regional managing director David Ghannoum said he was proud of the project team “who have brought this landmark destination to life”.
“Throughout construction, we’ve delivered a range of complex elements – from a watertight, hydrostatic basement carpark built four metres below sea level in Blackwattle Bay, to the largest glulam timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere,” said Ghannoum.
“The project has also been built with sustainability in mind, using HVO100 renewable diesel in our tower cranes and partnering with Seabin to help improve the marine environment.
“Delivering a project of this scale is a true testament to the grit, resilience and collaboration of our team. It’s an achievement we’ll carry proudly in our portfolio for years to come.”

Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said the milestone reflects the depth of work behind the project.
“From when it opens, this world-class building will attract millions of visitors each year and provide an enormous boost to our economy,” said Minns. “Thank you to everyone who has slogged away at completing this incredible building that we can all be so proud of.”
Constructed on 481 marine piles and with 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement, the building features more than 400 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams, which were delivered by barge from Glebe Island. This approach removed more than 5,650 truck movements from local roads, reducing congestion and emissions during construction.
The roof is designed to admit natural light throughout the day, harvest rainwater for recycling and generate energy through solar panels to help offset operational consumption. It can also be illuminated with multi-coloured LED lighting for special events.
The project includes more than 6,000 square metres of accessible public domain. Cultural and historical storytelling has been integrated throughout the Civic Plaza, with five creative installations honouring the area’s First Nations heritage and industrial past.
Environmental initiatives continue below the waterline, where seawall tiles, coral panels and hanging fish habitats have been installed to encourage marine life in Blackwattle Bay.
More than 700 construction jobs were created during delivery, and the new facility will support 700 ongoing roles. Approximately $670 million in contracts were awarded to Australian businesses.
Retail space will double compared with the existing market, supported by a mix of seafood traders, specialty food retailers and dining options ranging from takeaway through to premium waterfront restaurants.
With chefs Luke Nguyen and Ho Jiak already confirmed, several high-profile operators are also joining the precinct. Sushi Oe will expand to Pyrmont, GetSashimi will introduce a large-scale sushi train, chef Toru Ryu of Restaurant 16 will open a new venue, and Ichie will bring hamayaki seafood barbecue to Sydney for the first time.
The new Sydney Fish Market was designed by 3XN/GXN Architects in association with BVN and Aspect Studios.
