BMD founder and chairman Mick Power has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Queensland University of Technology in recognition of his leadership in business and long-term contribution to communities across Australia.

Since founding BMD in 1979, Power has grown the business into Australia’s largest privately owned civil construction contractor, delivering infrastructure projects nationally and internationally. Today, the company generates more than $2.4 billion in annual turnover and employs more than 2,400 people.

He has built his career on a values-led approach to leadership, with a focus on projects that connect and strengthen communities.

“Success is not only measured by what we build, but by the opportunities we create for others,” he said. “This philosophy has guided me throughout my career and continues to shape BMD today.”

BMD now contributes more than $1.5 million annually to philanthropic and community initiatives spanning sport, education, healthcare, the arts and veterans’ services. Employees across the country take part in hands-on volunteering, fundraising and disaster recovery support, including BMD’s “ute army”.

His commitment to Australian sport has included partnerships with organisations such as the Brisbane Lions, Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Scorchers, BMD Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club, North Queensland Cowboys, Melbourne Vixens and Queensland Rugby League.

Further, BMD has supported Wynnum Manly Junior Rugby League for more than 40 years, backed golf through its Pro Am series at Wynnum Golf Club for more than 25 years, and funded the Power Family Music Hall at Moreton Bay College.

Power’s personal values of Family, Driven, Empowered and Collaborative continue to underpin BMD’s culture, shaping how the business approaches community, partnerships and project delivery.
