On Sydney’s Northern Beaches, a new chapter of surf lifesaving is inspiring the next generation of coastal leaders, with help from environmental technology company KISTERS. The Collaroy Breakers Cadets program, launched this summer by Collaroy Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), gives local teens aged 13 to 18 hands-on surf lifesaving experience, leadership mentoring, and a chance to build confidence and community spirit.

Spearheading the program is surf lifesaving legend Sean Kenny, one of Australia’s most decorated competitors and coaches. As mentor and coach, Kenny brings years of experience to guiding young participants through resilience workshops, ‘look out for a mate’ sessions and coastal safety modules.

“This program is about more than surf skills,” says Janelle Kenna, program lead at Collaroy SLSC. “It is about building character, connection and confidence – lessons that stay with you long after you leave the beach.”

As principal sponsor, KISTERS saw a natural alignment between the program’s focus on resilience and the company’s own mission of environmental stewardship and community care.

“We are thrilled to stand behind an initiative that strengthens young people and their connection to the coast,” says Wally Varela, managing director of KISTERS Australia. “At its core, it is about resilience, the same principle that drives our work in protecting projects, water and communities.”

The partnership forms part of KISTERS’ social responsibility – a commitment to supporting both infrastructure resilience through technology and community resilience through local initiatives.

“Whether it is helping project managers weather-proof their sites or helping young Australians build confidence on the beach, it is all about enabling people to thrive despite challenges,” adds Varela.

As the Collaroy Breakers Cadets gear up for their first season, KISTERS’ support ensures they are equipped, not just with gear, but with the resilience to look out for each other and their environment.
