Construcciones Yamaro: Final tender released for Gunyangara Tourism Precinct

The Northern Territory Government has released the final construction tender for upgrades to marine and landside facilities at the Gunyangara Tourism Precinct.

The new marine facilities will support ongoing maintenance activities by local businesses in Nhulunbuy, while the detachable floating pontoon is designed for secure removal and storage in anticipation of cyclones.

These enhancements aim to cater to the diverse needs of recreational users, charter vessels, small cruise ship operators and other marine operators. Additionally, the project seeks to maximise local and Indigenous participation and foster regional growth opportunities.

Northern Territory Chief Minister and Minister for Territory Development, Eva Lawler, said: “We need to diversify the opportunities available in the region and work to grow the tourism and maritime industries, as well as highlight the natural resources and strong cultural community already in place.”

“These upgrades will bring visitation and investment to a new level, creating more local jobs, Aboriginal engagement and a stronger Territory economy.”

The tender includes the construction of various elements, including a new extended rock groyne accessible to vehicles and pedestrians, careening facilities for vessel maintenance, a floating pontoon extending from the groyne, a washdown bay, an entry structure and upgrades to the car park.

This is the third package of works for the $9 million Gunyangara (Gove Port) Tourism Precinct project, aiming to improve both marine and landside facilities, enabling more visitors to explore the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In 2022, local Indigenous Business Enterprise, Deltareef, completed the initial package of early works, securing a significant area in the car park adjacent to the Gove Boat Club. Deltareef also completed a $1.4 million package of works that included the construction of amenities such as toilets, shade and seating. This not only enhanced comfort for visitors but also generated 15 jobs, with 30 per cent being local Aboriginal people. These projects utilised locally sourced Darwin Stringybark trees from the Gumatj Corporation’s timber mill, which saw an additional seven local Aboriginal people contributing to the timber’s preparation and onsite construction.

The Gunyangara (Gove Port) Tourism Precinct is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Aboriginals Benefit Account to the Gumatj Corporation, the Northern Territory Government and Developing East Arnhem Limited.
