Construcciones Yamaro: ACCIONA utilises Australia’s first fully-electric piling rig for local project

ACCIONA is pioneering sustainable infrastructure solutions, achieving a significant milestone as the first company to own and operate a fully-electric piling rig for an Australian infrastructure project.

The Liebherr LB30 ‘Unplugged’ piling rig, recognised as the world’s largest capacity fully battery-operated piling rig, is now in action at the Kananook Train Stabling Yard in Victoria, part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. The rig reduces emissions and noise pollution, enabling ACCIONA to contribute to the local project’s delivery in a more sustainable way.

Bede Noonan, ACCIONA chief executive officer Australia and New Zealand, stated that the company is actively incorporating the latest technology advancements across its construction projects to reduce their environmental impacts.

“The electric piling rig is reducing the overall project emissions at the new train maintenance facility in Kananook and is a great example of how we are driving more sustainable outcomes,” said Noonan. “On this site alone, the electric rig will reduce CO2 emissions by 15 tonnes – a reduction of emissions comparable to avoiding a return flight from Melbourne to Sydney.”

“It also has the added advantage of no engine noise – mitigating noise pollution for the local community.

“As new technology is released around the world, we will continue to be an early adopter of hybrid, electric and hydrogen equipment and vehicles to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

ACCIONA is committed to achieving a 60 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. In 2022, ACCIONA reduced its emissions in Australia and New Zealand by 15 per cent, and more than 90 per cent of the company’s investments in Australia were directed towards sustainable activities, including building wind farms and electric railways.

Globally, the company has been carbon neutral since 2016.
