Construcciones Yamaro: $92 million for new mental health facilities in Rockhampton

The Queensland Government has committed $91.95 million towards a new Rockhampton Mental Health Unit Refurbishment and Expansion project.

A contract for the construction of the new development is expected to be awarded later this year, with construction anticipated to begin mid-2024 following a detailed design process with the contractor.

Queensland’s Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services and Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman said the new mental health facility will provide more beds and essential support services closer to home for residents in Rockhampton and surrounding areas.

“We know regional areas are particularly vulnerable to mental health crises and by increasing our commitment to services in Rocky we can ensure this community has access to the support and services they expect and deserve,” said Minister Fentiman.

“I have met with the hard-working staff in the hospital’s cardiac ward who are committed to delivering the very best care for their patients, so it’s important we provide them with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure they can continue their lifesaving work.

“These projects will significantly enhance the level of healthcare services available to Rockhampton locals.”

The project will deliver a new 32-bed mental health facility instead of the existing $12.8 million plan to refurbish the facility.

Once complete, in early 2026, the facility will provide treatment and care to more consumers in Rockhampton and surrounding areas experiencing an acute episode of mental illness.

It will also be delivered with the cardiac theatre expansion currently in tender. The $28.5 million project to deliver a cardiac theatre at Rockhampton Hospital is expected to start in mid-2024, subject to the ongoing procurement process.

The new theatre will establish a diagnostic and interventional cardiology service within the region, enhancing the range of cardiovascular procedures to include coronary angiograms, coronary stents and pacemaker implantation.

The cardiac theatre is anticipated to open in mid-2025.
