Construcciones Yamaro: Community consultation to start on Werribee Line level crossings

The Victorian Government is calling for community insight into the removal of three level crossings and the construction of a brand-new station on the Werribee line.

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) team will begin community consultation in the coming weeks with information sessions and a community survey to ensure locals have a say in the design of the removals and the new Spotswood Station. Alongside community consultation, the LXRP team will be undertaking detailed site investigations and traffic and engineering assessments to help shape the project.

As part of the LXRP, a rail bridge will be built over the road at Hudsons Road in Spotswood and a new elevated Spotswood Station will open in 2028. The new station will include modern amenities, and more accessible facilities for commuters.

In 2026, a road bridge will be built at the Maidstone Street level crossing in Altona.

The Maddox Road level crossing in Newport will also be removed in 2026, with an elevated rail bridge set to replace the boom gates. Community consultation and further investigations will inform design improvements to the local traffic network to maintain connectivity between Newport and Williamstown, with a closure the preferred solution for the removal of the level crossing at Champion Road.

Victoria’s Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the removal of level crossings on the Werribee line will not only make local roads safer, but also guarantee thousands of local jobs.

“We are getting on with the job of removing every level crossing on the Werribee Line, easing congestion and clearing the way for more trains to run, more often,” said Minister Allan.

The Victorian Government aims to remove 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2030, making the Frankston, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Lilydale, Sunbury and Werribee lines level crossing free.

The community will be invited to provide insights into what they love about their local area and how they move around. The online survey and information about in-person and online events will be available at engage.vic.gov.au
