Kattsafe tackles the bottleneck of industrial access engineering

For more than 20 years, Australian height-safety specialist Kattsafe has been on a mission to make access simpler and safer. For the last 10 of those years, that mission has led to refinements in modular access systems.

The company recognises that the industry’s reliance on heavy, rigid steel for industrial access causes unnecessary friction and delays in construction. Its latest development, the Industrial Modular Access Stair Tower, marks a turning point. By bringing a new level of structural integrity and operational speed to large facilities, it reduces the complexity and extended timelines of traditional methods.

This shift is enabled by the system’s integrated speed, which, supported by Kattsafe’s online configurator, is delivered across the project lifecycle, from initial concept to final installation.

Speed in design

The first source of speed is Kattsafe’s online modelling configurator – Kattsafe Builda. Traditionally, specifying a compliant access system involved engineers and drafters working for days or even weeks to create and revise custom designs.

Kattsafe Builda captures the company’s focus on simplification by empowering its team to model designs and refine configurations efficiently on behalf of clients. The platform automates much of this process, generating instant compliant drawings, technical specifications and component lists with built-in compliance constraints to ensure accuracy.

It also shrinks design cycles, often by several weeks, reducing the costly and time-consuming back-and-forth planning and engineering that is typical of prefabricated steel systems.

Pace and agility on site

The focus on speed continues when the system is delivered. Unlike steel, which is heavy and difficult to install, often requiring heavy-duty cranes, the high-strength aluminium stair tower arrives flat-packed and lightweight. The system assembles using Kattsafe’s proprietary T-bolt and T-slot connection method.

Keeta Voss, marketing coordinator at Kattsafe, explains: “Components are stacked module by module, similar to Lego, converting a traditionally labour-intensive operation into a quicker, more straightforward assembly process.”

Adding to this, the modular composition accommodates construction tolerances and site variations. Kattsafe’s system features adjustable brackets that allow contractors to make simple on-site calibration adjustments during installation. Instead of imposing delays and redesigns – which often meant starting over with steel – this agility ensures the project keeps moving and avoids planning delays.

Long-term value

The benefits extend beyond installation. The stair tower is fabricated from aluminium, which removes one of steel’s age-old problems: rust. It resists corrosion, extending the system’s lifespan and sustaining performance in demanding environments. It is also recyclable and eliminates the maintenance burden of steel.

“It shows that steel is no longer the only option and that access systems can be faster, cleaner and more adaptable,” adds Voss. “If we can encourage more architects, specifiers and builders to see what modular aluminium systems can do, it will change the industry completely.”
