The topping out of a new Tillys Play and Development Centre in Newcastle marks a major milestone in a project aiming to ease the city’s mounting childcare shortage.

Located within the Junction Fair Shopping Centre, the 109-place facility will offer early learning for children up to six years of age across three purpose-built levels, each with dedicated play areas and age-specific spaces.

Scott Girard, head of property at Stirling Property Funds – the firm behind the development – said the centre would help meet a critical need in the area.

“We’re excited that we’ve achieved another milestone during construction and continue to advance works on Tillys,” said Girard.

“Tillys will deliver a key piece of social infrastructure for the community. As is the case in many inner-city areas, the supply of childcare accommodation is not keeping pace with demand, resulting in both a shortfall of places and rising costs.

“That’s why we’re proud that the completion of Tillys will assist in addressing the 146-place shortfall in childcare places within The Junction and surrounding areas.”

Privately owned and family run, Tillys will operate the new facility under a long-term lease. The business has nearly 30 years of experience in early childhood education in Newcastle, and the centre will create 27 local jobs.

Tillys CEO Donna MacIntyre said interest had already exceeded expectations, with 158 families registering for enrolment.

“Tillys has been providing care and education to children for over 30 years and we’re looking forward to providing local children and their families with the highest quality early childhood education and care,” she said. “We have an amazing team of early childhood educators ready for onboarding and we’re super excited to meet our new families.”

Construction on Tillys The Junction began in January 2024, with the centre expected to open in early 2026.
