The $1.1 billion Frankston Hospital redevelopment has reached another milestone, with the final tower crane now dismantled as major construction enters its final year.

The largest health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s southeast, the project is set to increase hospital capacity and improve patient care. At its peak, four fully electric, renewable-energy-powered tower cranes were in operation. Now, with 900 workers onsite, construction is progressing inside and out. The hospital’s new helipad is being installed, while interior work continues with healthcare services fitted out level by level.

The new clinical services tower will include an inpatient services operating theatre suite, women’s and children’s services, cancer care and acute mental health facilities. Once complete, the hospital will have 130 additional beds, 15 new operating theatres and the capacity to treat 35,000 more patients each year – helping to reduce wait times and ease pressure on surrounding hospitals.

Upgrades to emergency care are also underway. The new paediatric zone and mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub are taking shape, while a 13-bed short-stay unit is already in use.

“The new mental health spaces at Frankston Hospital will make a real difference for locals needing specialist help and support, when they need it,” said Victorian Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt.

With more families settling in the southeast, the redevelopment is expanding specialist services for women and children, including new maternity, obstetrics and paediatric wards, a women’s clinic and a special care nursery.
