The $1.1 billion Frankston Hospital redevelopment has hit a milestone, with the external façade of the new clinical services tower now complete. The project aims to enhance healthcare in Melbourne’s south-east, increasing capacity to treat an additional 35,000 patients annually once fully operational.

Victoria’s minister for health infrastructure, Mary-Anne Thomas, recently visited the site and highlighted the potential of the project.

“We’re transforming health services for families in Frankston, the Mornington Peninsula and right across Melbourne’s south-east – delivering them the world-class healthcare they need, closer to home,” said Thomas.

Reflecting the beauty of the Mornington Peninsula, the façade features 4,485 glass, terracotta and porcelain panels. These panels, weighing between 250 and 1,000 kilograms, were craned into place to maximise natural light in patient rooms.

Other features of the redevelopment are progressing steadily, with the installation of solar panels and construction of a helipad, which will be lifted onto the roof in stages. Inside the tower, fit-out work is advancing floor by floor.

Construction of the emergency department’s new paediatric zone and the mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub is well underway, with staff and patients already benefiting from the recently opened 13-bed short stay unit.

The workforce is now at its peak, with 900 people onsite. To date, approximately 1.8 million hours of work have been completed by around 3,800 workers since construction began in June 2022.

The upgraded hospital will deliver a new clinical services tower and main entrance, 130 additional beds, 15 new operating theatres, and expanded mental health, oncology and children’s services.

The project will also house the Peninsula Health Women’s Health Clinic, which commenced services earlier this year. The clinic will provide advanced care, including an endometriosis and pelvic pain multidisciplinary service and an allied health team offering physiotherapy and other specialist care.

The Frankston Hospital redevelopment is set to be completed by late 2025, marking a new chapter for healthcare in Melbourne’s south-east.
