Residents in the Bass Coast region will soon benefit from greater access to essential health services closer to home, as the Victorian Government’s new Phillip Island Community Hospital reaches structural completion.

Victorian Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas visited the site this week to assess the progress of the vital project, aimed at relieving pressure on nearby health facilities, including Wonthaggi Hospital.

“The new Phillip Island Community Hospital will take pressure off nearby hospitals and ensure locals have access to the urgent care they need, closer to home,” said Minister Thomas.

The multi-storey hospital is being delivered in two stages and creating up to 100 jobs during peak construction. With 32,000 hours already worked onsite, the completion of the main concrete structure paves the way for the hospital’s striking façade to take shape, while internal fit-out progresses.

Managed by Bass Coast Health, the Phillip Island Community Hospital will expand on the services currently provided by the Phillip Island Health Hub, addressing the health and wellbeing needs of the local community, including after-hours care for non-emergency injuries.

By year’s end, the first stage of the project to expand the Urgent Care Centre will near completion and, once complete, the second stage of the project to transform the existing centre into dental treatment areas will begin.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) in partnership with Bass Coast Health and builder SJ Higgins, the Phillip Island Community Hospital is part of the Victorian Government’s more than half-a-billion-dollar investment in the Community Hospitals Program. This project builds on the state’s investment in the Bass Coast region, with the $115 million expansion and upgrade of Wonthaggi Hospital opening its doors last year and planning underway for the next stage through the Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund.
