Darren Browne has established himself as an influential figure in the field of temporary works engineering at Coates. Possessing a skillset that is both diverse and specialised, he has introduced valuable strategies and solutions that have enhanced both Coates’ team and projects.

Originally from Ireland, Browne began his professional journey about 17 years ago as a graduate engineer at IBM, specialising in technical solution sales. However, his career experienced a marked shift when he joined Coates in Australia.

“I was really attracted to hydraulic shoring, and when I found out Coates is the exclusive provider of this in Australia, I was really excited,” he says.

At the core of Browne’s responsibilities as a temporary works engineer is the seamless coordination of diverse project components. Serving as a vital link, he aligns customer technical requirements with operational insights from the installation crew and client feedback.

“We visit sites a lot and I have a lot of team meetings with our clients and also with the various consultants,” says Browne. “Often, builders focus more on the practical solution and its cost, rather than the engineering intricacies.”

Reflecting Coates’ core values, Browne recalls a significant achievement where he and his team exemplified the value of ‘being our best’. Within three weeks, they delivered a complex solution for a client: a 50-meter Super Strut unsupported from plunge columns, one of the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific. This underscored Coates’ capabilities and reinforced client trust.

Navigating a successful engineering career requires strategy and dedication, as Browne points out. He stresses the importance of a structured career journey, advising newcomers not to skip essential steps.

“Building a strong foundation is pivotal, first by gaining the necessary knowledge and then by refining your skills,” says Browne.

He cautions against being enticed by high-paying roles without this foundational depth. With the right approach, dedication and essential skillset, a promising career path becomes not just a possibility but an achievable reality.

Browne highlights the collaborative culture at Coates, emphasising that team members actively engage in mutual learning and collective development.
