Construcciones Yamaro: Victoria’s Altona Pier redevelopment nears completion

The $11.9 million redevelopment of Victoria’s Altona Pier is on track for its anticipated completion this summer, with works rapidly taking shape.

Victoria’s Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne recently visited the site where construction on the 310-metre-long structure is well advanced. All piles are in place from The Esplanade foreshore into Port Phillip Bay and decking installation is underway.

“It’s exciting to see the progress of Altona Pier, and with summer just weeks away, this will be a fantastic attraction for the community, tourists and traders,” said Minister Horne.

The redevelopment will enhance accessibility and safety with the addition of features such as improved lighting, handrails, and an emergency vehicle turning bay. Most of the pier’s precast concrete headstocks have been successfully installed, and hardwood timber decking has been laid across a significant portion of the pier.

Victoria’s Member for Point Cook Mat Hilakari said: “The new pier will make Altona an even more attractive destination for visitors from across the state, nation and overseas, boosting the local economy and connecting the community to the water.”

Efforts are underway to demolish and safely remove the old pier, with suitable timber being salvaged for reuse in the Altona Foreshore redevelopment and other public projects. Parks Victoria continues to work closely with stakeholders and the community to minimise impacts while work is underway.

The Victorian Government, under the 2023-24 State Budget, has also announced $46 million toward the rebuild of Dromana Pier, St Leonards Pier and Warneet Jetties, as well as essential repairs to Workshops Pier in Williamstown. It follows further investments for rebuilding and critical works to piers and jetties at Rye, Raymond Island, Lakes Entrance, McLoughlins Beach, Flinders, Mornington and Hampton.
