Waste Expo Australia 2023 is one week away, with thousands of attendees expected to converge on the two-day conference and exhibition at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

With more than 100 exhibitors and 60 conference speakers over four stages, the free-to-attend event on 25 and 26 October is set to showcase new innovations in the sector and discuss greener, cleaner and circular approaches to waste management.

The premium conference, focused on the theme of Advancing Towards Sustainable Resource Recovery, will address topics across four streams: Local Government and Policy, Commercial Demolition and Commercial and Industrial (CD&CI), Circular Economy and Waste Innovation, and Waste to Energy/Energy from Waste.

Conference keynotes to kick off Day One will spotlight Ingrid Stitt, Victorian Minister for Energy; Tony Circelli, CEO of Recycling Victoria; Lee Miezis, CEO of EPA Victoria; and Matt Genever, interim CEO of Sustainability Victoria. The conference then splits into the four streams, with a networking drinks event to end the day at South Wharf.

Matt Genever of Sustainability Victoria says he’s looking forward to sharing an update on the organisation’s progress towards its ultimate challenge – a net zero emission, circular economy in Victoria.

“The conference at Waste Expo Australia for us is a significant ‘meeting of the minds’, with thousands of attendees working towards the same goals we are,” says Genever. “The opportunity to learn, network and hear about some of the out-of-the-box initiatives that people are pursuing towards net zero or the circular economy is made even better by the fact that it’s right in our backyard.”

Sally Williams, former Brand Power presenter and sustainability advocate, will be MC of the Local Government Stream for the two-day conference. She’s excited to guide the discussion across topics that have the potential to make a real difference in communities across Australia, from landfills and composting to recycling, empowering communities and managing waste.

“Local government is on the front lines of waste in Australia, so educating and empowering our leaders and public servants to make wise decisions with waste and plan for a more sustainable future is so important,” says Williams. “I’m looking forward to hearing from experts in the waste management and resource recovery field at Waste Expo Australia 2023.”

The conference and exhibition also enjoy strong industry support, including from the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA). The VWMA breakfast, held before the conference kicks off on 25 October, is scheduled to maximise networking opportunities for industry professionals. Ken Dickens, VWMA’s president, says events like Waste Expo Australia are important to drive the industry forward.

“We’re eagerly awaiting Waste Expo Australia next week, from the start of our networking breakfast right through to the conclusion of the conference and exhibition,” says Dickens. “There’s plenty to learn, and we have plenty to share with the industry through connecting.”

From education and networking to sourcing and supplier conversations, the exhibition component of the event will feature 98 international and domestic suppliers to the waste management industry, including Bucher Municipal, EEA Group, Repurpose It, Komatsu, Eldan Recycling and TOMRA Collections.
