BESIX Watpac has become the first builder to be recognised as a Maritime Technically Assured Organisation by Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

The accreditation reflects the company’s sustained record in complex maritime infrastructure delivery, including projects under the Ferry Wharf Upgrade Program (FWUP3). It covers a broad spectrum of works – from wharves, jetties and pontoons through to piling, fendering and corrosion control.

For TfNSW and other delivery partners, the status provides greater confidence in the reliable delivery of assets. It also establishes a framework of accountability and quality, embedding competency-based assurance processes to ensure projects meet expected standards and performance benchmarks.

“This accreditation is a testament to the technical depth and collaborative spirit of our people,” said Giovanni Polimeni, general manager for New South Wales at BESIX Watpac. “It reflects our commitment to excellence in maritime and transport infrastructure and our ability to deliver complex projects that meet the highest standards of safety, quality and innovation.”

BESIX Watpac has designed and built wharves at North Sydney, South Mosman, Taronga Zoo, Greenwich Point and Double Bay, and prepared designs for Darling Point, Manly Wharf 3 and Manly Cove West.

Delivery required navigating difficult site constraints, integrating a limited pool of specialist supply chain partners, and managing continuity of work across iterative project awards. The company expanded its partner network while maintaining high standards of quality and safety to achieve program outcomes.

“Since securing the managing contractor role in 2021, BESIX Watpac has successfully delivered multiple wharf upgrades,” said Polimeni. “We were selected for our collaborative contracting approach and complex engineering expertise. I’m incredibly proud of the team’s work and what this means for our New South Wales business.”

Every wharf design was focused on accessibility, ensuring compliance with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport. Features included floating pontoons, compliant gangways, vertical transportation lifts, hearing augmentation and equitable access paths.

The accreditation has strengthened BESIX Watpac’s relationships with TfNSW and marine supply chain partners, positioning the business for future collaboration across New South Wales’ transport infrastructure pipeline.
