A $2.5 billion development in Sydney’s Inner West has officially broken ground, with construction of Burwood Place now underway. The milestone was marked by a sod-turning attended by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, Burwood Mayor John Faker, Member for Strathfield Jason Yat-sen Li and Federal Member for Reid Sally Sitou.

Delivered by Holdmark in consultation with Burwood Council and the local community, the project is planned as a transit-oriented precinct combining housing, jobs, public spaces and transport links. Located in the heart of Burwood town centre, midway between the Sydney and Parramatta CBDs, it has been designed around the “five-minute neighbourhood” principle, with shops, services, transport and community facilities all within a short walk.

Spanning two city blocks along Railway Parade, the precinct will sit next to Burwood railway station and close to the future Burwood North Metro, part of the Sydney Metro West line scheduled to open in 2032.

With this level of accessibility, the project is positioned to become a major driver of local employment and investment. Burwood Place is expected to generate more than 5,000 jobs – including 1,700 during construction and a further 3,300 once operational – and contribute over $750 million annually to the local economy.

Holdmark CEO Kevin Nassif said the development would support both local priorities and state and federal housing targets.

“This is more than a development; it’s a reflection of Burwood’s bold, inclusive vision for the future. Holdmark values the shared vision for Burwood’s tomorrow – to shape a connected, sustainable and safe community that embraces and celebrates its culture and diversity. This project will deliver on all fronts,” said Nassif.

“We are proud to have worked closely with Burwood Council and the community to design a visionary, people-centred project that will become a template for inclusive and connected communities where people gather to live, work and play.”

Designed by a team of award-winning architects, the masterplan includes the transformation of a council car park into an urban park and Culture House, as well as the creation of Burwood Lane, a new pedestrian link between Burwood Road and the civic core.

Construction will be staged over six years, starting with the park, Culture House, supermarket and retail spaces, childcare centre (subject to approvals), a medical precinct, and the first wave of commercial and residential areas.

Burwood Place will deliver:
  • More than 5,000 square metres of public space, including a town square and urban park
  • A new library and Culture House for community use
  • 27,000 square metres of retail, medical and fresh food space
  • 14,000 square metres of commercial space, including an A-grade office tower
  • An entertainment precinct
  • Seven basement parking levels with electric vehicle charging facilities
  • 1,041 new homes across four buildings, including 5 per cent affordable and 10 per cent adaptable housing
