Construcciones Yamaro: New 2050 vision for Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour stands at the cusp of a transformative journey, as a significant project progresses to the next phase of development and the New South Wales Government formulates a new 2050 vision.

At the forefront of this transformation is the $764.5 million State Significant Development (SSD) of Harbourside, a project spearheading the evolution of Darling Harbour, guiding its transition from a 1980s landmark to a modern and vibrant destination for the next generation of visitors. With official approval now in hand, the SSD entails the demolition of the original Harbourside building to pave the way for a new 50-storey mixed-use residential and commercial building, featuring up to 265 new homes.

As part of the project, Mirvac has agreed to a $5.2 million contribution to generate affordable housing, including in the surrounding Pyrmont area.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment is currently assessing a separate SSD for the design of Harbourside’s public domain. This SSD includes upgrades to the waterfront promenade, incorporating seating, green spaces, heritage interpretation (storytelling of the area’s history) and public art.

Major renewal is also underway nearby with the restoration of the Pyrmont Bridge, expansion of the Chinese Garden, a new stage in Tumbalong Park, the opening of the new W Hotel, and the IMAX redevelopment.

Furthermore, the NSW Government has announced it is developing a Darling Harbour 2050 Vision to provide a ‘big picture’ for the community, allowing the precinct to evolve over time while preserving its distinctive and globally renowned character.

NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said Darling Harbour is the third most visited destination in the state, a place where many community members have shared and celebrated significant moments.

“The NSW Government is focussed on continuing to rejuvenate this iconic part of Sydney’s harbour foreshore, and to drive more housing in well-connected locations,” said Minister Scully. “This major SSD approval will support the Darling Harbour of tomorrow and create hundreds of new homes close to transport and services.”

“The 2050 vision will also guide future decision-making and secure Darling Harbour as a world-famous destination for generations to come.”

This visionary plan is being developed in partnership with the community. More than 1,100 participants have contributed through various channels, including an online survey, pop-up stalls and focused group discussions. Emerging themes from these engagements highlight opportunities to enhance connections to the water, plant more trees, and create more open green spaces. There is an ongoing engagement with the Aboriginal community, and the feedback obtained will form an important part of the vision.

The ultimate goal of this vision is to provide a planning framework to help transform Darling Harbour into a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable waterfront precinct. A draft of the plan is expected to be presented for public feedback by mid-next year, reflecting the views of the community.
