Construcciones Yamaro: Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop project creates hundreds of jobs

The Victorian Government’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project is continuing to create hundreds of jobs and a huge pipeline of opportunity for students looking to kick start their construction careers.

Once complete, the project will help deliver an extra 11.8 million daily trips and manage an 80 per cent increase in private vehicle trips.

Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews said the SRL will be a game-changer for local and interstate travellers alike, and will continue to support important jobs in the state throughout its construction.

“We’re recruiting hundreds of Victorian workers, trainees and graduates to help deliver this vital project,” Premier Andrews said.

Project crews are paving the way for tunnel boring machines and preparing for construction of the six new underground train stations, with sites being established this year in Burwood, Glen Waverley, Monash, Clayton, Box Hill and the stabling facility at Heatherton.

The initial works package for SRL East is set to create more than 800 jobs, and a recruitment drive will launch next month to attract workers across a diverse range of fields including engineering and technical specialists, trades, and roles in sustainability, health and safety, and urban planning.

Apprentices, trainees, and cadets will complete 14 per cent of hours during the first phase of construction.

Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop Minister Jacinta Allan said the SRL will create thousands of secure jobs while transforming the state’s transport system.

“SRL is a generational investment not just in infrastructure, but in how our city grows, revolutionising our public transport system and ensuring we’re ready to support a population the size of London within the next 30 years,” added Minister Allen.

Additional opportunities will be provided to girls studying science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects through the school-based SRL East traineeship program, to be delivered in partnership with Laing O’Rourke, Head Start and Holmesglen TAFE.

In an effort to support more women to pursue careers in the construction industry, the group of Year 11 and 12 students will gain hands on experience on the SRL East project two days a week over the two-year program.

Expressions of interest for the 2024 Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) Graduate Program will open in coming months.
