Construcciones Yamaro: Contractor appointed RAAF Base Curtin Redevelopment Project

Multiplex has been appointed as Managing Contractor for the development phase of the proposed Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Curtin Redevelopment Project in Western Australia.

The proposed $244 million project, subject to government and parliament approval, will deliver refurbished and improved facilities and infrastructure across the air base in Derby, located 2,200 kilometres north of Perth.

Works will include civil and road upgrades, electrical system works, water infrastructure, building revitalisation, communications upgrades, airfield upgrades, landscaping and new accommodation.

Multiplex CEO John Flecker said the company is pleased to be working with the Federal Government on the project.

“It has been an ambition of ours to expand into the defence sector for some time and after delivering three Centres for National Resilience for the Commonwealth using the same form of contract, we believe we are well positioned to successfully manage this project and involve ourselves further in the Australian defence sector,” Mr Flecker said.

As Managing Contractor, Multiplex will manage the delivery of all work including design development, assistance with government approvals, procurement and subcontracting of all construction work. WSP Australia has been engaged as Project Manager and Contract Administrator by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and will oversee this procurement.

Multiplex Regional Managing Director WA Chris Palandri added, “Importantly, the project represents a major opportunity for Multiplex to work with the communities and businesses in Derby, and the broader Kimberley region.”

“We look forward to exploring options to increase sustainable employment opportunities, cadetships and apprenticeships.”

Project design, site visits, sub-consultant procurement and community engagement are already underway to finalise engineering design requirements and government approvals before construction commences in late-2024.

RAAF Base Curtin forms a key part of the ADF’s network of northern air bases and plays a key role in supporting the training and operations of the ADF in North-Western Australia and the Indian Ocean.
