Construcciones Yamaro: Planning for the Canberra Theatre Centre renewal progresses
A community consultation process for the future expanded Canberra Theatre Centre is now open until 20 November 2023 as part of the project’s planning phase.
The expanded Canberra Theatre Centre project, including the new 2,000 seat theatre, is intended to attract more performing artists and shows to Canberra.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said Canberra has been missing out on shows and performers due to the small size and age of its current venues.
“This project can change that,” said Minister Barr. “It will also drive more tourist activity in the city and support our retail and hospitality businesses, and night time economy.”
Community consultation for the Canberra Theatre Centre, which is being designed to cater for audiences for the next 50 plus years, will contribute to design development and helps the design team to understand what people want from their live performance experiences.

ACT Minister for the Arts Tara Cheyne said the project will bring the ACT closer to its vision for Canberra to be recognised as Australia’s arts capital.
“We want to hear what matters most to people when they come to a live performance, what are their challenges, and what are their big ideas to create an iconic, vibrant and inclusive Canberra Theatre Centre where everyone feels welcome,” said Minister Cheyne.
Design, consultation and approval processes will continue into 2024 and will inform planning for the project’s construction phase.
Community members can have their say via an online survey; pop-up stands in the theatre centre foyer from mid-October; a pop-up team before selected shows; or a pop-up at Canberra Centre on Thursday 12 October and Thursday 26 October 2023.
