Melbourne’s northern suburbs received a significant boost in travel safety and efficiency with the completion of major works on the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade, which now has all lanes open in Doreen.

The project team, led by Major Road Projects Victoria in partnership with Laing O’Rourke, recently opened the final section of new lanes between Painted Hills Road and Garden Road, effectively doubling traffic capacity between Plenty Road and Yan Yean Road.

Originally scheduled for completion in 2025, the project’s major works were finished ahead of time. Dipal Sorathia, program director at Major Road Projects Victoria, expressed satisfaction with reaching this milestone early, highlighting the benefits for local residents and commuters.

“We thank the community for its patience during these important works,” said Sorathia. “We now look forward to completing the project’s finishing touches in the coming months.”

The upgrade goes beyond additional lanes, introducing improved intersections, safety barriers, and shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists. A key feature of the project is the new four-lane bridge over the Plenty River, with the historic bluestone bridge now repurposed as a pedestrian and cycling path. Additionally, new traffic lights at the Ivanhoe Grammar School pedestrian crossing enhance safety for the school community.

Minor works, including landscaping and other finishing details, will continue along Bridge Inn Road in the coming months, with temporary lane and side-road closures to ensure crew safety.

The Bridge Inn Road Upgrade aims to reduce travel times, enhance connectivity to essential locations like Mernda train station and town centre, and provide safer, more reliable travel options for Melbourne’s northern communities.
