Construcciones Yamaro: Understanding embodied carbon in construction projects

Image
Coates Hire Belmont. (Image: Paul Kane/The Photo Pitch) With almost 40 per cent of global carbon emissions generated by the built environment, considerable research, innovation and policy-making continue to target emissions reduction in this sector. To date, the focus has largely been on the sustainable operation of buildings. However, with embodied carbon accounting for around one-quarter of the construction industry’s greenhouse gas emissions and 11 per cent of all emissions globally, according to Architecture 2030, momentum is growing for a whole-of-lifecycle approach to decarbonisation. Robyn Simpson , national manager for environment and sustainability at Coates , highlights that operational carbon pertains to the energy used for operating buildings and infrastructure, while embodied carbon is generated during the selection, production and transportation of materials, as well as through construction processes and eventual demolition. “As the energy efficiency of buildings

Construcciones Yamaro: Effective crack control in water-retaining structures

Image
Image: bilanol/stock.adobe.com Water-retaining structures, like wastewater treatment plants, require stringent crack control measures to maintain structural integrity and functionality. Concrete experiences volume changes due to early-age thermal contractions, autogenous shrinkage and drying shrinkage. When these volume changes are restrained, shrinkage-induced stresses develop, leading to tensile stress. If these stresses exceed the concrete’s tensile strength, cracking can occur. Excessive concrete cracking is one of the most common forms of damage in reinforced concrete structures. Controlling crack widths in concrete is often achieved by adding steel reinforcement, which distributes strains along the member length, producing many narrow and closely spaced cracks. Inadequate reinforcement, however, leads to fewer but wider cracks. Cracking can cause significant issues, including leakage, reduced structural performance and accelerated deterioration due to the ingress of harmful
