Construcciones Yamaro: $350 million Princess Alexandra Hospital expansion takes shape

The Princess Alexandra Hospital expansion is rapidly progressing, marked by the unveiling of an artist’s impression of the multi-million-dollar project.

The plan for the development includes 219 new acute inpatient beds, 30 new intensive care unit beds, 13 new cancer treatment bays and reconfigured specialist treatment spaces.

In a vertical expansion, five new floors will be added, comprising four clinical spaces and a floor for plant and machinery. Positioned atop the emergency department, this expansion is set to provide the hospital with an additional equivalent space of almost three full rugby league fields.

Anticipated to be operational in the second half of 2026, the project aims to enhance patient flow and accessibility to acute care, intensive care and emergency services in Brisbane’s south.

The artist’s impression illustrates how the new section will integrate into the existing building, housing additional beds and advanced treatment equipment.

The $350 million project is a key part of the Queensland Government’s almost $10 billion Capital Expansion Program to deliver new and upgraded health and hospital infrastructure across the state – reportedly the nation’s largest health capital program.

Noelle Cridland, chief executive of Metro South Health, emphasised the significance of the capacity expansion project at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

“As a provider of tertiary level surgical and transplant services, cancer care, trauma and rehabilitation, the Princess Alexandra Hospital needs the additional capacity to continue to deliver more of these services for the growing community,” said Cridland.

“Our expansion project team and clinicians across our specialist areas are working together with Queensland Health to co-design new health infrastructure that will deliver modern models of care and services that improve the patient experience and outcomes.

“As always with projects of this size, significant contingency plans are in place to ensure patients and hospital services experience minimal disruptions.”

Parallel to the hospital expansion, a $5.8 million refurbishment and expansion of the renal high dependency unit is well underway, which is delivering an additional three treatment spaces.
