Construcciones Yamaro: Redevelopment of Tasmania’s Sorell School nears completion

The finishing touches are being applied to the first stage of works for Tasmania’s $27.48 million redevelopment of Sorell School.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said the Tasmanian Government was investing in the modern, high-quality education facilities local learners need.

“Stage 1 works at Sorell School have delivered a new administration centre, car park and main entrance to the school, as well as a Years 9-12 learning hub and a Years 3-6 learning hub,” Minister Jaensch said.

“The final elements of Stage 1, which include the fit-out of the new food building, are expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.”

Work on Stage 2 of the redevelopment has already begun and will include the demolition of old buildings and construction of a new K-2 learning hub and the new Sorell Child and Family Learning Centre to be co-located on the site.

“The Child and Family Learning Centre is part of our separately funded 2018 election commitment of $28 million to deliver six new centres across the state,” Minister Jaensch said.

The final stage of works includes refurbishment of an existing building for the new Years 7-8 learning hub and will be delivered in 2024.

Sorell School celebrated its bicentennial in 2021 and is the oldest continually operating public school in Australia.

“It was fantastic to visit the school to see how students and staff are using the new facilities,” Minister Jaensch added.

“Construction of the new facilities is supporting jobs and the local economy, as well as providing contemporary education spaces for families in Sorell and the surrounding region for the next 200 years.”

The full redevelopment of Sorell School is expected to be completed in late 2024.
